History
Indonesia against Child Trafficking (Indonesia ACTs) is a national campaign to combat children trafficking in Indonesia. It is a part of the Asia ACTs, a regional campaign to fight child trafficking in Southeast Asian countries that also is a part of the International Campaign against Child Trafficking (ICaCT) coordinated by Terre des Hommes-Germany and the International Federation of Terre des Hommes.
The initiative to establish the Indonesia ACTs was one of the Consultative Meeting on Global Campaign against Child Trafficking results, held by the TdH Germany on 28th of February to first of March 2001 at SAMIN office, Yogyakarta. This meeting, with its 16 attendees, concluded several decisions, of which was to set up a join program organisation to conduct campaign against the children trafficking in Indonesia in a form of a network called Anti Children Trafficking Network. The selected focal point was Mohammad Farid. In the same year, October 2001, TdH Netherlands had their first workshop on Anti-Trafficking in Women and Children Campaign in Southeast Asia.
In 2003, Anti Children Trafficking Network was held a three days Community Education Training against Child Trafficking with two days preparation in advance. It was attended by 10 organizations, they were the YMKK (Batam), LBH Apik (Pontianak), KKSP (Medan), YKB (Jakarta), Setara Foundation and LRC-KJHAM (Semarang), Samin Foundation and Rifka Annisa (Yogyakarta), Kakak Foundation and SARI (Surakarta). In a training session facilitated by Amihan dan Reggie (Asia ACTs). In this training the participants agreed upon the shift of focal point from Farid to Emmy and we called Anti Children Trafficking Network as an Indonesia ACTs (Against Child Trafficking).
The training has finalized with the Action Plan and Evaluation of the training. One plan during 2003 was to campaign to promote the World Anti Child Trafficking Day on 12th December. From 10 participants who involved in the Community Education Training, there were eight (8) organizations from five (5) areas carried out some activities for the campaign. The activities varied from rally, carnival and study tour, play performance, radio and TV broadcast, to two other activities that were not in our schedule. The campaign has conducted between October 2003 to January 2004 in 5 areas campaign, both in the urban and rural areas. It involved the children and adults such as street children, children victim of commercial sexual exploitation and violence, vulnerable children to trafficking, Jermal children, schoolchildren, traditional fisher-folks children, and plantation children. The adults were students, government officials, and Press, NGOs and Legal Aid organization.
There were at least 800 persons and children involved in the rally/carnival/study tour and interesting report on the newspaper. There were more than 350 adults and children got the community education on the anti trafficking issues. Twenty-five persons from different backgrounds discussed the law draft on the trafficking elimination. Unfortunately, most of the campaigns had held in Java Island, it has expected that other islands in Indonesia are able to do the same campaign in the future, with various activities involving more stakeholders to give awareness to the society and the importance of their involvement to eliminate child trafficking in Indonesia.
Now the members of Indonesia ACTs are 12 organizations. On June 28th-30th, 2004, a workshop has held in Yogyakarta to build the network system and other basic organisational planning. This meeting was eventually become the first General Assembly of Indonesia ACTs and successfully formulated vision, mission and goals.
Our vision : To have an Indonesian society where the family, community and the state work together to respect children’s rights and protect them from trafficking. Our mission : Indonesia ACTs is a network that works for the respect of children’s rights by empowering the community in protecting children from trafficking and encouraging the state to fully implement the National Plans of Action and enact laws and ordinances for the prevention, protection, recovery and reintegration of children from trafficking.
In the first General Assembly we arranged the work plan, i.e.:
- Integrated campaign against child trafficking program to launch and promote 12 December as an Anti Child Trafficking World Day in Indonesia to celebrate Palermo Protocol signed.
- To disseminate information to the community in particular, and to the public in general, to help them formulate actions on how to support the campaign against child trafficking.
